We had the great pleasure of
publishing for the first time anywhere a novel
written about the destructiveness of Islam and given
a futuristic setting. The author, Jane Ahlam
Scully, has published this novel at
http://stores.lulu.com/JaneScully. Readers
are urged to go to the Lulu site and purchase a copy
of this fascinating book. It truly is like no
other we have read. We have removed the files
now that Hatred of the Angels is in
print. The author has kindly provided synopses
of selected chapters. We are also keeping the
biographical statement about the author.

Chapter I
Executions in the City of 1001 Mosques took
place on Fridays before midday in Faith Square close
to the former palace of the first Caliph of Europe.
The caliph had resided there for some time after the
break-up of the caliphate and the ensuing civil wars
and anarchy in Cordova until his assassination. He
had been accused of falsely claiming that he
belonged to the house of the Prophet. The revised
sacred genealogical scrolls, kept at Mecca under the
guardianship of the holy sheriffs, were consulted,
which corroborated the accusations. The caliphate
was immediately divided. The loyalty of the Berberic
Guards of the Red Turbans swerved as new claimants
for the caliphate arose at once in several
provinces, and their agents promised the Red Turbans
unheard-of privileges and rewards for their support.
What was more important, each pretender was able to
produce impeccable genealogical data going back to
the Prophet’s daughter Fatimah. Deserted by his
troops and counselors, threatened in the Capital of
the Faithful – as Cordova was popularly known – the
caliph was forced to flee to the Emirate of Gaul,
where he collected new genealogical evidence against
the pretenders and their military supporters. This
he was able to publish and thereby start an
intricate scheme to return to the capital with help
of the discontented emirs of Andalusia. But during
these hectic preparations he fell victim to the
poisoned dagger of an assassin in the Main
Mosque.(...)
Chapter II
The
former British Isles were being torn by fratricidal
wars which were dividing the island over the
question of the hypostasis of the Qur'an. Two
factions had by this time emerged and were fighting
each other, as well as dissident elements within
their own ranks, with unparalleled hatred and
bitterness. One group were called the
"creationists", for they held that the Qur'an is not
eternal but only created by Allah to serve man here
on earth until the Day of Judgment. The other,
although they called themselves the Truly Faithful
in their own pamphlets, were more generally know as
the "anti-creationists" or “evolutionists”, clinging
to a view totally opposite to that of the
creationists'. The evolutionists maintained that the
Qur'an had never been created but had eternally
existed as the Evolving Word of Allah, although they
denied the Christian fallacy of a hypostatical union
with Him. As such the Qur'an would always exist in
an unaltered but evolving state and be valid even in
paradise, where the angels would endlessly recite
its verses. On the basis of this doctrine the
self-proclaimed Islamic Republic of al-Caledonya had
come into being in the north, where there was a
large power base of anti-creationist sentiment. This
republic put to the sword all those in the Muslim
clergy who opposed its views. The fiercest
opposition came from the south, from the emirates of
al-Walya and al-Anglya, that had temporarily formed
a coalition against al-Caledonya. The emirs accused
the anti-creationists of heresy, specifically of
harbouring Christians whose poisonous views they had
adopted. The anti-creationists replied that despite
mountains and coldness no Christians had for
generations found shelter in the north; but that the
views of the creationists were evidently riddled
with the sophism of old Christian errors, and they
knew for sure that the memories of the Christian
times were still vivid in the south where not all
churches had been levelled to the ground or
converted into mosques. They affirmed that
hypocrites still held services with the elements of
the Christian rite in some of these churches, but
this was hotly contested by the creationists.
Although it shared the views of the
anti-creationists, there was no alliance between the
Islamic Republic of Gaul and the Republic of al-Caledonya.
The Exalted Commander of the Islamic Republic of
Gaul himself had stated that the political
ramifications of unity with any part of the divided
realm of Islamic Albion would necessarily prove
detrimental to the Republic of Gaul. Many in
government thought of the pirates roaming the
Prophet's Channel: in order to promote the welfare
of the Republic, and also to prevent the chance of
terrorist activity, of which there was a large
amount every day across the Channel, the Bureau of
External Relations had contracted the military to
destroy the long disused underwater tunnel that had
been built between the two nations in the Age of
Ignorance. And both the south and the north received
substantial subsidies from the Republic to continue
their struggle. (...)
In New
Medina or what was once called New York, there
existed “the Ground Zero Mosque” (...), where a
spectacular pilgrimage was made annually on the
eleventh of September. Almost all European sheiks
and emirs - including the New Alamuts and the
Neocarmathians' sheikhs who exceptionally declared
that day the Day of Islamic Harmony - sent their
envoys to take part in it. It had been the practice
in earlier years for some of the more powerful emirs
to go themselves, in order to demonstrate to their
enemies how secure they felt themselves and their
territories to be from incursions or riots in their
absence. Nevertheless, the volatile modern political
times precluded this possibility for any except the
most wild and risk-taking. The annual festivity
itself was crowned by an event in the square in
front of the mosque. This involved the so-called
Tower Burning Ceremony. Two plastic toy planes, full
of jet fuel and with an in-built ignition mechanism,
were hurled from a raised platform against the
models of two 110-storey towers. The towers were
filled with foot-high figures of infidels and
apostates, with their distinctive clothes, and all
of them holding profane and pagan symbols from the
Age of Ignorance.”
Chapter VIII
Francis found his son’s history textbook for “mixed”
elementary schools in the Islamic Republic of Gaul,
for fifth-graders. The title was simply “Europe’s
History”, and the publisher was stated to be
“The Academy for the Research and Glorification of
Islam approved in accordance with Law by the
Education Department of the Faith Police.”
(...) On the
first page of the book was printed in thick and
ornate green letters:
“By Allah the Almighty,
in the entire history of mankind there has never
been a civilisation more criminal, wicked and unjust
than western civilization!”
He turned over
to the contents page:

Chapter X
The Jews refused to read the revised and
corrected version of the Bible as prepared in the
Hall of Wisdom in the capital of the Emirate of
Cordova with additions made later in the City of
1001 Mosques. For many years Muslim scholars from
all over the Islamic world had been working hard
gleaning and sifting all possible records,
documents, testimonies, manuscripts and other
sources of religious information to re-establish and
present the authentic version of the Bible, in which
the advent of the prophet Muhammed was announced -
in accordance with the Truth of the Revelation and
the Quran. In several prominent passages in the
Pentateuch and prophetic books of the Old Testament,
as well as in the four Gospels and the Revelation of
Saint John in the New Testament, this most joyous
moment in the history of mankind was now clearly
revealed. The signs of his Coming and his deeds were
duly exposed with all linguistic subtleties and the
utmost historical accuracy. But when confronted with
the revised version the Jews obstinately denied its
veracity and persisted in error, wholly aware of the
dire consequences of their obstinacy.
They (...)even preserved a variety of wild
recollections of a Jewish state that - they alleged
- once existed in what is now the Pan-Arabic Union.
They controlled - they asserted - the Holy City of
Jerusalem, and the Dome Mosque was in their hands.
They told, indeed, unheard-of stories of how they
conquered all their Muslim neighbours in
battlefields on several occasions. But it went too
far. Even Christians ridiculed them for making
people believe such nonsense. 'Allah is invincible
and He wouldn't have allowed His worshippers to
suffer an adversity!' - the Jews heard in reply when
they told someone about those legendary times. In
their myths the Jews had always exalted their heroes
- Moses, Joshua, King David, the Macchabees. But the
latter-day Jews listed off some unknown ones with
obscure names - Ben Gurion, Moshe Dayan, Albert
Einstein. Yet no one except themselves recognised
any of them, let alone could tell anything about
them. In no history book was any mention of them
made. No newspaper ever wrote about such people and
the things they had allegedly accomplished; no
television show ever suggested it. Inevitably, all
their testimonies were found false and silly, and
the Jews enjoyed the notoriety of being arrant
liars.
Christians did much better. They accepted -
at first grudgingly - the revised version of the
Bible; in time all other versions of the Bible were
suppressed and keeping and reading them made a
criminal offence. They acquiesced in part to the new
doctrine that ascribed to them the place they were
occupying now, while their leaders preached
submission to the Muslim authorities as the Muslims
preached submission to their Allah. But due to their
oral traditions there were some that held on to
their old faith, despite attempts at unification. It
proved, though, to be a fertile ground for schisms
and heresies in the tiny Christian community in the
Islamic Republic of Gaul, which were seen with glee
on the part of the Faith Police.
The weaker, the spiritually pampered, and the
unprepared ultimately lost. Those who ascribed pity
and good heartedness to their God found it absurd to
perpetrate daily bloodshed and violence against
friends and neighbours. Inevitably, their beheaded
corpses became the foundations for the newly-won
Islamic dominion of Europe. With it, Christianity
ended in the West and in the East. As the war
deprived Christianity of its legitimate right to
exist, its aftermath deprived it of the very
foundations on which it could exist. The remaining
Christians were herded into separate quarters and a
shameful infidelity tax was imposed upon them. They
had to wear distinctive garments and in every other
respect they had to pay a heavy price for belonging
to a false religion. Churches were confiscated,
changed into mosques, closed or simply levelled to
the ground. Open services were forbidden, priests
and believers banned or simply murdered. No bells
and crosses were allowed to remain in the churches.
Francis' grandfather even knew many places in
the City of 1001 Mosques, now swathes of grass or
communal dumps, where old churches had once stood.
And the name of the city? Was it really the City of
1001 Mosques? Francis' thoughts wandered.... ‘No, it
was not! He was sure of that!.... What was it,
then?.... P...? Poros?.... Piros?.... Piram?....
Purim?.... Puras?.... Paris! The city was called
Paris! Yes, Paris!....’
Chapter XI
As the old man looked at Francis he winked at the
guards. Francis’ handcuffs were immediately taken
off and the two guards withdrew silently from the
room. Francis was left standing uneasily and very
afraid before the old man at the table.
The
man gazed at Francis for some time and then said at
last, ‘You may well wonder why I have summoned you
here.’ As Francis did not answer the man continued:
‘I am the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Republic of
Gaul, the Head of the Council of Religious Edicts
and Research and of the Council of Superior Clerics
and Scholars. I am also the Supreme Consultant of
the Exalted Commander of the Republic of Gaul. My
name is Rashid ibn al-Haqqi and I am a nephew of the
Exalted Commander of our Islamic Republic of Gaul
al-Baraki. I supervise the printing of the Holy
Book and religious material as I run the Department
of Religious Education. I also oversee the public
archives, the Islamic History Bureau and certain
religious endowments and benefices. I presided over
the committee that revised your Christians’
religion’s texts, your “Gospel” as you call
them.’(...)
“Christianity is a dying religion. In the City of
1001 Mosques you are an island of impurity in a
rapidly rising sea of righteousness. It will be soon
as dead as your European culture is! I possess the
power to levy or deny the death sentence. And on
hearing your resolution I have decided that soon
after dawn you will be executed. You have shown
yourself unworthy of our mercy. As such you will be
hurled from the Heathen Tower as Allah long ago
decreed. We will burn your infidel corpse before
your uncleanness infects the very ground you bleed
upon! Your ashes will be thrown into the Seine,
together with those of your comrades – a communal
excoriation. In this way the memory of your
existence and that of your dead religion will perish
as well. Christianity will die with you! No one will
ever come across any vestiges that they might guess
what life was like here in the City of 1001 Mosques.
Such are those who forsake their own
salvation.’(...)
‘You Christians were once so many and so powerful.
You possessed so many lands , almost the whole world
was yours. But you possessed everything illegally,
as all legal right of property comes from Allah
alone . All belongs to Him and through Him to His
faithful servants. It was only necessary and
logical that it had to be returned to its legal
proprietors - to us the Faithful. Your decline was
as necessary as it was remediless, as you perverted
Allah’s teachings and falsified his words. You
Christians entered an unholy alliance with
blasphemous heresies. In Yunanistan – what you once
called Greece – you concluded that alliance and were
proud of it, you kaffirs! But it was in this Greece
that the supreme heresy of the “freedom” of human
mind originated. What folly! Freedom is only found
in Allah, for whosoever is Allah’s slave is a free
man.’
‘So
it’s not true,’ Francis finally spoke. He felt he
had to do something other than feel the pain in his
legs. ‘What’s written in my son’s history textbook
about the Revolution? There was no need for the 1001
Martyrs, or for the Islamic armies to conquer the
lands?’
The
Grand Mufti snorted. ‘All our forefathers who
demonstrated and intimidated the kaffirs in the
streets and in their homes and in their workplaces
were martyrs! They did not have to blow up the
cowardly infidels. They were not worth the blood of
the Faithful! We turned the democratic weapons of
the infidels against them. We abolished unfaith by
suffrage and the vote!’
‘How
did that happen?’ Francis asked, although he was
only half-heartedly interested. He had long since
learned to accept the presented view of history that
was inculcated throughout the republican media. But
perhaps he sensed that there was a last chance –
before his seemingly inevitable fate – to learn
somehow the truth about his homeland, and his
life.
‘We
said we wanted freedom,’ the old man continued, ‘and
they gave us freedom as they used to give it to
anyone. We simply declined to tell them we would use
such freedom to establish the Divine Law. They could
not foresee that, as their freedom was a
licentiousness to indulge in atheism and polytheism.
What freedom is that, kaffir? To be enslaved to a
lie? True freedom is in the service of Allah. Then
we asked our brothers and sisters: “Do you want to
be ruled by this law?” What do you think they
answered? We introduced Islam here in a democratic
and peaceful way. A Europe-wide referendum was held
and so many despairing Christians voted “Yes” that
Europe became Islamic almost overnight. Ninety
percent of Europeans awoke to a new Age! Those few
rebels who remained enthralled in their obstinacy
gathered in some of our cities in the west and in
the east and northeast formed the rebel state of
Kafiristan. We reunited Europe under the Caliph from
the family of the Prophet. We began Allah’s
foreordained plan to build a truly Islamic nation in
Europe, free from all forms of atheism, idolatry and
impiety. ’
‘What about the Greeks?’
‘The Greeks!’ he snorted disdainfully. ‘The Greeks
fought to the bitter end with foolish zeal, as they
once had done against our Gazi. They sought a heroic
end but were utterly destroyed at last. So much the
better! While we accepted you Christians in good
faith, look how you have repaid us! After the
Revolution we restored the Parthenon mosque, which
had been one of the finest in Yunanistan. Now the
voice of a muezzin resounds anew as in the times of
Mehmed the Gazi and his successors, when they had
warred down that proud city, so full of its kaffirs
and idolaters and its infidel idols Socrates and
Plato and Aristophanes! With the voice of
faithlessness stilled, the voice of the Faithful
will resound there forever, just as it will
throughout Europe!’
He
ended his speech and took several deep breaths. He
went to the bookshelf and took a large volume, and
as he did so Francis took a desperate chance to
change his position and relieve some of the aching
in his legs.
‘Look!’ the man said. ‘This is the diary of our
traveller El Hasan ben Muhammed el-Wazzan-ez-Zayyati,
or as you called him, Leo Africanus. He was a good
Muslim and wrote it in one of your languages:
“The
Persians also lost their literature and writings.
All their books were burnt according to the decision
taken by the Islamic scholars. They understood that
as long as the Persians preserved their books on
natural history, law and idolatry they could not
become true Muslims.”
He
pierced Francis with his sharp eyes and took another
book from the shelf. ‘This same clear idea was
expressed by another of our writers, Al-Biruni, in
his “Chronology”. In Choresm, our general Kutaiba
ibn Muslim annihilated people who were learned in
the Choresmian writings, legends and history, and
who taught sciences known among the Choresmians. He
persecuted them in all possible ways.’ He opened the
book, skipped several pages and began to read:
“After he had killed their teachers, scribes,
writers and scholars and burned their books and
rolls of records, the Choresmians became
illiterate.”
‘And
who are they now?’ he exclaimed. ‘Good Muslims
fighting with the utmost fervour against the yellow
devils. They fight side-by-side with the Muslim
Turks, the conquerors of heathen Greece! So much did
the destruction of heresy accomplish.’
‘Why are you telling me these things?’ Francis
asked. His head was starting to reel from the pain
in his legs and he found that focussing his thoughts
to construct a question helped him stay conscious.
‘Didn’t our great Islamic scholar Ibn Khaldun say,
“The past resembles the future more than one drop of
water another”? What we are doing now is what we
have always wanted to do. Do not think we are
inventing anything? If you want to know us, our laws
and institutions, our ways, and our future, you must
learn of our past. We want our future to resemble
our past. We will introduce this ideal wherever we
rule. Why should we want a future different from our
glorious past? We could not live in it! Such a
future would be unbearable, and senseless. We desire
an eternal past! (...)
There are so many false traditions and thoughts that
prompt man to reject or pervert religion and all of
them make him inhuman. To prevent this we had to
make the infidels illiterate, to deprive them of
abusing themselves with their evil past, and to
prevent their heretical recollections and memories
from contradicting the true Faith. It is just as we
had done with the Persians and Africans. It was only
after they had forgotten their pagan literature that
they were enabled to become true Muslims.’
He
stopped and fixed his eyes again on Francis: ‘We did
the same with you in Europe and your atheistic and
blasphemous literature and art. They were not worth
preserving. You do not even know now that such
literature existed in Europe. It flourished and for
some time it seemed that your strength came from it
as long as your will was not corrupted by your own
smug inertia and opulence and ensuing cowardice. We
made you illiterate and imposed upon you our spirit
– the Spirit of the Quran. The noble and glorious
Quran!’
